Maury, Matthew

(1806-1873) American naval officer and chronicler of winds, currents, and other observations. Maury led the effort to standardize meteorological observations so that they could be shared and compiled more easily. He is best known for his publication, The Physical Geography of the Sea and its Meteorology, first published in 1855.
