rough endoplasmic reticulum

A system of membranes present in most eukaryotic cells that separates the cytoplasm into compartments. In comparison to the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, the rough version is evenly covered with ribosomal granules and specializes in synthesizing and transporting proteins.
