The Effect of Temperature
on Diffusion
This animation shows the diffusion of ammonia (NH3) into air (a mix of O2 and N2) at two different temperatures. The bottom panel shows a temperature nearly twice that of the top panel. Molecules at higher temperature will diffuse more rapidly than those at a lower temperature due to the system’s higher kinetic energy.
This animation does not take into account other factors, such as pressure, that might be affected by temperature and would influence diffusion rates.
