The standard error of the mean is an inferential statistic that provides an estimate of how far the population mean is likely to be from the subsample mean. The standard error of the mean is calculated as the subsample standard deviation (s) divided by the square root of the subsample size (N), as seen in the following equation:

standard error of the mean = s/√N
