An aqueous solution containing a weak acid and its conjugate base that moderates pH changes when acid or base is added. For example, in a solution containing both carbonic acid (H2CO3) and carbonate ions (HCO3-), the carbonate ions that can absorb excess H+ if an acid is added, stabilizing the pH.
