Thomson, John

English physicist born in Manchester (1856-1940). In 1884, Thomson won the Adams Prize for his Treatise on the Motion of Vortex Rings, which concerns atomic structure. His most famous work was a study of cathode rays, which resulted in his discovery of the electron and the existence of isotopes. For this he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906.
