Course Description

Chemistry in the Community is a non-traditional, one-year chemistry course recommended for students who wish to take chemistry to fulfill their 3-year science requirement, but who do not plan to pursue a science related career.
The course examines a variety of societal issues and introduces the chemistry concepts necessary to understand these issues. Students learn the basics of chemistry by applying chemical principles to real life situations encountered at home, in their community and globally.
Although the class is less rigorous and demands fewer mathematical manipulations than SCH804 Chemistry I, the class requires the student to solve mathematical problems, read articles and complete lab reports and assignments. Forty percent of the class work is laboratory-based and this lab work directly reinforces topics covered in the textbook. Among the topics covered are water quality, the structure and uses of materials, petroleum, air quality and nuclear interactions.
