Magnitude is a number assigned to a quantity and refers to the size or extent of something. There are several differing scientific uses of the term. In physics, it refers to the quantity of a measurement such as length, in astronomy it may refer to the brightness of a star, while in geology, it can indicate the strength of an earthquake.
