Polish microscopist and doctor (1815-1865) who lived and worked primarily in Berlin, Germany. Under his microscope, Remak discovered that new cells are generated through division of existing cells. Remak made numerous additional contributions to cell theory, but was continuously denied a professorship because of his Jewish religion.
